Desert Labrador Retriever Rescue
A Phoenix-based Rescue Group
Dedicated to finding loving, life-long homes
for displaced Labrador Retrievers.

DLRR is an all-volunteer, Federal 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue organization for Labrador Retrievers in Phoenix and most areas of Arizona. In addition to rescue, our volunteers provide medical care and/or rehabilitation for these dogs and then attempt to match them with appropriate, permanent homes. Through public education, we strive to help eliminate pet overpopulation by encouraging the spaying/neutering of pets. Maple

Donate to Steffi's Surgery Fund!
Steffi is an 18 month year old Yellow Labrador that was picked up as a stray by Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson. She was given shots and spayed but was put on the rescue list because she was showing lameness. DLRR rescued this sweet girl and had her examined by our Vet. She has been diagnosed with ruptured cruciate ligaments in both stifle (knee) joints. She will need surgery to correct this painful and debilitating condition. She can run quite well but when she sits, she is cannot bend her knee into the normal squatting position - her legs go out to the side to minimize the pain from bending the knee. This makes it very hard for her to get up. She cannot easily get her legs under her to push herself up.

The surgery she needs is called Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy or TPLO. This surgery involves making a curved cut in the top of the tibia bone and rotating the tibial plateau (the part that the femur contacts). It is then held in place with a metal plate and screws. This fundamental change in angle stabilizes the joint and compensates for the absence of ligament. Each knee surgery will cost around $3,000 dollars. She will be expected to heal about 12 weeks after each surgery.

Steffi is a beautiful girl but it is her personality that makes her an immediate hit with everybody she meets. We have already received one $500 donation from a family that met this wonderful dog. Can you help her get the surgery she needs with a donation towards the cost. Steffi thanks you.

Fosters Needed!
DLRR is in desperate need of fosters! Every dog that we take in needs a foster home to give it loving care while it is waiting to go to its new forever home. Foster homes are the cornerstone of our organization. All you need to be a foster home is an appropriate place to keep a dog, time to spend with your foster dog, and a heart big enough to love a dog that is in the midst of a big transition. Many of our dogs need training and extra care while in foster care, but in addition to knowing that you are helping to save a dog, you will be repaid in the unbounded love of a Lab.

4th Annual Donation Drive!

DLRR's 4th Annual 2011 Donations Drive is officially underway!
Since our inception in 2000, DLRR has saved more than 2,585 Labs in need! Because Arizona's animal shelters are severely overcrowded, DLRR is often the last chance a Lab may have. Any treatable illness or injury and of course, space issues force kill shelters to put even friendly Labs on the euthanasia list. And that's where DLRR steps in!

During our 2010 Donations Drive, we had an ambitious goal of $50,000 and with your help, we raised over $57,000 which was amazing and we truly appreciated your help exceeding our goal! In 2011, we hope that you will be able to help us meet or exceed our $50,000 goal again.

Veterinary care continues to be our biggest expense. We take the health and well-being of our dogs seriously and do our very best to make sure that all of their medical needs are met. DLRR pays for any veterinary treatment required and ensures that all labs receive updated immunizations and microchips. We also work to reduce pet overpopulation by funding spaying or neutering for all of our Labs. Last year, DLRR's veterinary costs exceeded $95,000. We expect to at least meet or exceed that figure in 2011.
